West Tower Repairs Completed

On 26 October the congregation of Memorial Community Church, Plaistow, took their Sunday service outside their landmark building on the Barking Road to celebrate the completion of repairs to the building’s west tower.

They gathered where scaffolding has stood for eight months, to sing a hymn and say a prayer of thanks for the work, which will stop rain pouring into the listed building and damaging the inside.

Baptist churches around the country who had contributed to the building of the church in 1921, along with local people, helped buy bricks for the £250,000 repair project. which was largely funded by English Heritage.

Now the congregation has the challenge of raising a similar amount to repair the east tower of the Byzantine-style church, which is used for a variety of community activities and projects including a weekly breakfast for up to 80 homeless people
