Bell Tower Appeal gets £186,000

Good News! At the end of March, English Heritage awarded Memorial Community Church a development grant of £18,000 together with an in-principle offer of a further £168,000 towards urgent repairs to the Bell Tower. The total cost of the repair work, which involves replacing large numbers of eroded bricks at the top of the tower and repairing leaking roofs, will be £260,732.
The development work will take place this summer, and the repairs will be carried out next year, as long as we can raise the rest of the money by 31 March 2011.
So far we have raised £9,000 for the Bell Tower Appeal through events like last year’s sponsored swim and bike ride, and the generous giving of church members.
We can reclaim the VAT, leaving £27,000 still to be raised from a mixture of grants, events and an appeal to people in the local area and beyond.
The tower contains a chime of ten bells which are also a war memorial: they are cast with the names of 169 men from Plaistow and West Ham who were killed serving in the First World War. Ideally we would have the bells restored at the same, which will add another £15,000 or so to the cost, and improve the staircase that leads up to the bells to make it safer for visitors including local school children.
If you would like to help with the repairs and restoration, please send cheque to Memorial Community Church at the office address. Any amount will help. You can buy a brick for £5, or 12 for £50... or you can restore a bell for £1500!
